How are artists on major labels treated? / Sony & Kesha Lawsuit / sexual assault within the music industry.

2015 in to 2016 has not been the best time for Sony, after the company was projected to lose $2.1 billion in 2015 and over the course of the past eight years Sony is $12 billion in total. In addition to this Sony has faced a lawsuit from one of its artists. Kesha took Sony to court in an attempted to get off of her contract with the record label.

So why is Kesha trying to get off Sony?

Kesha is suing to be let out of her contract with Dr. Luke.Kesha has alleged that Sony producer Dr. Luke had sexually and psychologically abused her by drugged and forcing himself on her and used his position to control her and her career. The lawyers representing Kesha claimed that Sony “knew of the conduct and turned a blind eye, failed to investigate Dr. Luke’s conduct, failed to take any corrective action, or actively concealed Dr. Luke’s abuse.”

At the time of the trial the Kesha was obligated to make three more albums with Dr. Luke for his label Kemosabe Records, so basically Sony was making Kesha work her abuser. But because she has refused to work with him she has been shelved by Sony so she will be unable to make new music with anyone else. Understandably the singer was worried that the time off may harm her career so filed for injunction within the court to expedite the case.

What Was The Result Of The Case?

Unfortunately the case did not have a happy ending when York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich denied the preliminary injunction that Kesha had filed. stating that it would irresponsible “to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry.”

So in the end Kesha’s contract is still in effect, but she has been granted permission to work with other producers. So in that sense she is able to get away from Dr. Luke but understandably Kesha’s has expressed doubt that Sony will promote any new music from Kesha.

Is there any good news from this case?

Well the silver lining to all this is that other artists have been showing support for Kesha including Ariana Grande, Lorde, Lady Gaga, and Demi Lovato. Taylor Swift & Adel.

  1. Well, interestingly the repeated allegations have seemed to have no negative effect on DR Luke’s career. I fact he has recently worked with Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and Jessie J.

More interestingly there as also been some talk that sony could be planning to drop him from the label after the negative backlash from the free Kesha campaign. But he as since gone on to say that this is not the case “The producer and songwriter insists he has ‘an excellent relationship with Sony”

below there is a link to a guardian article that you may fine interesting
